True - Five Minute Friday



Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.  Philippians 4:8 

As women most of us are good about pointing out these thought-worthy things about other people yet we fail miserably at applying this truth to ourselves.

As an adverb TRUE means: in accordance with fact or reality, and accurate or exact. 

How many of us have stood in front of a mirror and whipped ourselves verbally for what we see?  Statistics say that an average size woman in the US stands 5 foot 4 1/2 inches tall (or slightly more than 1.6459m).  The high end of a healthy BMI (24.9) for this height is about 145 pounds (or about 65.77 kg). Why is it then that we (me included) look at ourselves in the mirror and focus on "that" jiggle, or "that" bulge? Even if you are someone who doesn't meet or exceeds these statistics, why do we focus on the "bad" parts of us and not the good? Are your eyes still as beautiful as they were when your husband fell into them? Is your heart still in the right place? Do your children still love you because you did the best job you could raising them? 

As a verb TRUE means: to bring into the exact shape, alignment, or position required. Although this generally refers to something mechanical, the bible helps us align our minds to the truth. It tells us how to align our thoughts to the truth,

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2  


When we begin to focus on and give thanks to God our minds align with His. We begin to appreciate what He has given us and instead of beating ourselves up for what we don't like. We start to realize our blessings and want to make necessary changes to our weaknesses.

For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.…Psalms 139: 13-14

So brothers and sisters, whatever is true...think about these things!

  1. Oh Mindy, my sister-at-heart! First of all - your Scripture reference is exactly what I've been thinking since I saw this prompt! Next -- darned those mirrors anyway, huh?! Thankfully, none of this mirror stuff is what Christ sees. As you so wonderfully pointed out, there is so much more to us, so much more that is TRUE! Amen!

    1. I am so glad you stopped by. And I am thankful that His word is the truth, not the lies we feed ourselves when we look critically in the mirror. We should be more concerned with what Christ sees in us rather than our outward appearance.
